Jan Jacob SPOHLER is one of the greatest masters of winter landscapes, successor of Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870). Spohler was a teacher of his two sons Jan Jacob Coenraads (1827 - 1923) and Johannes Franciscus (1853 - 1894). He studied in Amsterdam under direction of Jan Willem Pieneman (1779-1853). In 1845 he became a member of Academy. He worked mostly in Amsterdam but visited also Haarlem, Brussels, the Hague, Rotterdam and Leiden. He tried to capture the elusive atmosphere of the Netherlands. His works can be seen in Teyler Museum in Haarlem, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam as well as Broederpoort, Kampen and various private collections around the world.
