French painter of landscapes and genre scenes, professionally active for nearly sixty years. He began studying painting in 1870s at the Fine Arts Academy in Paris, in the ateliers of Jules Lefebre – academic portraitist and Henri Harpignies – Barbizon painter. Thus, he was aquainted with both classical and innovative trends in painting. First, his painting was greatly influenced by the works of his masters, with time however, having observed impressionists at work, he grew fond of more spontaneous technique. He exhibited his paintings regularly at the Salons, receiving distinctions, and in 1927 he was awarded with gold medal. Levis was selling his paintings at the galleries of Paris and London. He was very popular among collectors from the USA.
