A Lake in the Mountains
1045 THE CIRCLE OF BARBARINI [2nd half of the 19th c.] A Lake in the Mountains
oil on canvas, 45 x 62 cm
Vienna artists, father and son, who succumbed to landscape painting. Franz in the beginning studied sculpture, in the atelier of professor Joseph Kempel and made drawing for goldsmiths from Vienna. With time he grew fond of landscape painting, especially views of the mountains. He used mainly oil paint and watercolour. Emil, educated in his father's studio, in the beginning concentrated on landscapes. However, when he gained artistic autonomy, he became interested in genre scenes, especially paintings representing city life. After a longer stay in Paris Emil Barbarini experimented with light and colour on his canvases. In comparison with his father's painting, his style appears more synthetic and raw.
