Ludwig KNAUS [1829-1910] studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Duesseldorf, in the ateliers of Otto Reinhald Jacobi and Carl Sohn and Wilhelm v. Schadow (1846-1852). Later, he continued education at the Academy in Paris. In 1857-58 Knaus travelled around Italy. After coming back to Germany, he settled in Berlin and then Duesseldorf. In 1874 he was appointed a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. Knaus was mostly interested in genre scenes. He is considered to be one of the most renowned painters of the Duesseldorf School of Painting. He was offered membership at the Academies in Berlin, Vienna, Munich, Amsterdam and Antwerp.
